Capacity Grants

NIFA provides support for research and extension activities at land-grant institutions through grants to the states on the basis of statutory formulas. Eligibility is limited to the cooperating institutions, most of which are 1862, 1890, and 1994 land-grant institutions. NIFA capacity grants are subject to the same OMB Circulars and Department regulations, with the exceptions identified in the NIFA Regulations.

Acknowledgement of Funding

Proper acknowledgement of your public funding in published articles, manuscripts, dissertations, posters, presentations, inventions, patents, and press releases is critical for the success of the agency’s programs. Please refer to Acknowledgement of USDA Support by NIFA for required language to acknowledge NIFA support in such publications, as appropriate per the NIFA Policy Guide.

Capacity Reporting

NIFA has established the NIFA Reporting System (NRS) in collaboration with Land-Grant Universities and other partners. This tool provides data management and reporting for capacity funded research projects and Extension programs. NRS currently contains the Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act of 1998 (AREERA) Plans of Work, Annual Reports of Accomplishments and other capacity grant data for research projects and Extension programs. Primary NRS users include Land-Grant Universities, other partner institutions, cooperating state institutions, and agency staff. For more information or access the NRS application, visit www.nifa.usda.gov/data/nifa-reporting-system. NRS is managed by the Planning, Accountability and Reporting Staff (PARS).
