USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture Announces Support for Teaching, Research, and Extension at 1890 Institutions
WASHINGTON, Feb. 23, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced support to build the institutional capacity in the food and agricultural sciences at the 1890 Land-Grant Institutions. Funding is made through NIFA’s 1890 Institution Teaching, Research and Extension Capacity Building Grants (CBG) Program.
The CBG program furthers the teaching, research, and extension capacities of eligible institutions through the achievement of three goals. It seeks to advance cultural diversity of the food, agricultural, natural resources, and human (FANH) sciences professional workforce by attracting and educating more students from underrepresented groups. Additionally, the program aims to strengthen linkages among the 1890 institutions, other colleges and universities, federal agencies, and the private industry. It also sets out to enhance and strengthen the quality of programs at the 1890 institutions to more readily establish them as full partners in the U.S. FANH sciences higher education system.
Applications may only be submitted by eligible 1890 Land-Grant Institutions. NIFA reviews all proposals accepted in NIFA’s competitive grant programs through an external peer review process in which a panel of experts from within the respective field in question takes part. Specific details on panel meetings, review formats, and evaluation criteria may vary among programs.
There is $18 million in available funding to support CGB programming. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2018. Please see the funding opportunity for details.
NIFA’s mission is to invest in and advance agricultural research, education, and extension to solve societal challenges. NIFA’s investments in transformative science directly support the long-term prosperity and global preeminence of U.S. agriculture.
