WASHINGTON, March, 22, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced the availability of funding to address the needs of rural Americans by providing individual and family health education programs. Funding is made through NIFA’s Rural Health and Safety Education Competitive Grant Program (RHSE).

The RHSE program addresses the health and well-being of rural America through supporting projects in the food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences: individual and family health education programs with specified contents; rural health leadership development education programs to assist rural communities in developing health care services and facilities, and assist community leaders and public officials in understanding their roles and responsibilities; and farm safety education programs to provide information and training to farm workers, timber harvesters, and farm families.

In fiscal year 2018, NIFA is soliciting applications for RHSE in the area of individual and family health education. Proposals that focus on the prevention and/or reduction of opioid misuse and abuse will be accepted. NIFA reviews all proposals accepted in its competitive grant programs through an external peer review process. Specific details on panel meetings, review formats, and evaluation criteria varies among programs.

There is $2.9 million in anticipated funding to support the RHSE program. Approximate funding per the estimated 8-10 awards is $250,000 - $350,000. The application deadline is 5 p.m. EST, May 24, 2018. For more information, see the RHSE program funding opportunity web page.
