Division of Nutrition

Poor diet and lack of physical activity are major risk factors for chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancers.

The Division of Nutrition manages a range of food, nutrition, and obesity prevention programs intended to help Americans eliminate these risk factors from their lifestyles.  In partnership with the Cooperative Extension System, the division conducts nutrition-related research and delivers educational programs to consumers throughout the country. In addition, the division informs policymakers of emerging research and public needs in order to support enactment of sound policies and laws.

GOALS

  • Reduce childhood obesitythe number one nutritional problem in America — particularly in low-income and minority communities
  • Encourage healthy food habits
  • Help limited resource families and youth attain the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to change their eating habits and improve their overall health
