Dr. Manu M. Manohar is a Biological Sciences Program Specialist in the Food Safety Division, Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition administering competitive and non-competitive Research, Education and Extension Food Quality and Safety programs. Before joining NIFA, Dr. Manohar worked as a Regulatory Scientist at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and as research faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Manohar has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry and Master’s and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Madras, India. While at FDA, Dr. Manohar conducted applied research and evaluated the safety of biologics and related therapeutic agents. At the University of Pennsylvania he studied the mucosal responses to gut opportunistic infective agents and the protective mechanisms of mucosal tissues against oxidative injury and the role of anti-oxidants and fatty acids against injury. He also has experience in reviewing patent applications in biotechnology, including the patentability of small molecules and excipients used by pharmaceutical and food industry.
